Description:
We are often in contact with people from different cultures who have had different life experiences. When working with a diverse set of colleagues or living abroad, you must:
• Recognize your own cultural lens or perspective;
• Understand how culture shapes behavior and its interpretation; and
• Become familiar with basic concepts and models of intercultural theory and practice.
When you complete this course, you will be able to identify eight key dimensions found within cultures. You will have enough cultural competence to work smoothly with others and avoid mistakes that could harm your business relationships or cause misunderstandings and problems.
This course is organized in three parts and is offered up in a conversational style throughout.
Part 1: Thinking About Culture: We discuss what we mean by culture, ideas about culture, and some basic concepts and vocabulary.
Part 2: Cultural Fundamentals: We look at specific cultural dimensions that we need to understand to work in a multicultural environment.
Part 3: Culture in Context: We put culture into the larger context of 21st century life and work. We discuss cultures, the intersectionality of national culture with other types of culture in the global and post-global world, and elements of globalization that affect culture.
